One of Britain’s top commanders has issued a stark warning over the consequences that could follow if Vladimir Putin loses the war in Ukraine.
Air chief marshal, Sir Mike Wigston, says Russia will be ‘vindictive and brutal’ in defeat and poses a danger to the UK.
The Royal Air Force’s most senior officer has warned that Russia’s air force, surface navy and submarine force are a direct threat to Britain and NATO and that it’s something ‘we must focus our minds on’.
He told The Telegraph: ‘When the Ukraine conflict is over and Ukraine has restored its borders, as it must, we will have a damaged, vindictive, and brutal Russia, whose means of harming us is through air attack, missile attack and subsurface attack.’
Sir Mike also warned that Russia’s threat will not let up – and could potentially get even worse – if Putin is driven out as the country’s president.
The 55-year-old made the comments in his final interview as chief of the air staff before he steps down next month after four years in the role.
Russia has consistently made threats towards the UK and other Western countries over their backing of Ukraine and the supply of weapons to defend against the invasion.
While leaders met at the G7 summit in Japan last week, Russian deputy foreign minister, Alexander Gruskho, said that countries who supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets are taking ‘colossal risks’.
He told the Russian state news agency Tass: ‘We can see that Western countries continue to stick to an escalation scenario, which carries enormous risks for them.
‘In any case, we will take it into account when making plans. We have all the necessary means to achieve our goals.’
Earlier this month, Russia vowed it would launch an ‘adequate response’ to the UK after it supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles.
Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said: ‘Russia is extremely negative about the supply of Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles by Britain to Kyiv, an adequate response will be required.’
The Kremlin also issued a threat to the UK back in March, saying that ‘there are fewer steps to a nuclear collision’.
Defence minister, Sergei Shoigu said at the time: ‘Another step has been taken, and there are fewer and fewer left. Naturally, Russia has something to answer this with.’
Asked whether this meant that the world was closer to a nuclear collision, Shoigu replied: ‘It was not by chance that I told you about steps. There are fewer and fewer.’
G7 leaders last week agreed they will stiffen sanctions against Russia and said they had ensured that Ukraine had the budget support it needs for this year and early 2024.
A joint statement said: ‘Today we are taking new steps to ensure that Russia’s illegal aggression against the sovereign state of Ukraine fails and to support the Ukrainian people in their quest for a just peace rooted in respect for international law.’
