The other day, I was talking to a solid American at the local Starbucks about the challenges of EMP weapons in the future. If you don’t know what these are, it’s very simple they are electro-magnetic pulse weapons which send out a blast so strong that it ruins all electronics for miles, the larger the blast the bigger the range. This would mean electronics in your car, refrigerator, microwave, and all the gas pumps, and all the computer systems, including all the infrastructure that runs the pumps for the water and electrical grid would be down instantly.
That also means that all your cell phones, smart phones, and mobile technology wouldn’t be working either. So what can we do, we would be in the dark and without communication. You can’t buy anything at the store because the credit card machines and cash registers wouldn’t work. You couldn’t withdraw money from your bank, as the ATMs would be fried as well. Even if they had a backup generator, the electronics wouldn’t work, the whole thing would be gone. Those survivalists who have portable generators and gasoline tanks at their house, well it wouldn’t matter because none of your electronics stuff would work anyway, and you couldn’t plug anything into it anyway.
My acquaintance suggested taking a portable generator, a small one, putting it in a trashcan and wrapping it with a special coating to make it a cylindrical Faraday cage. Still, I explained to him that it wouldn’t matter because he wouldn’t be able to run anything or charge anything up because everything would be fried. He couldn’t put his refrigerator in the trashcan, so that wouldn’t help much. Unless he put his coffee maker, microwave, flashlight charger, transistor radio, ham radio, and things like that inside the same trash can then he might least have some power for somethings. Still, he would also need to put in an extra smart phone?
Again, the cell towers would be down, but they don’t have to be. We could perhaps put tethered retractable cell phone towers underground in special battle hardened containers, and once an EMP device went off, we could open up those doors with a special hand-crank and allow those tethered cell phone tower balloons to float up into the sky, and then everyone would have cell phones again. Of course, that’s only providing that people still had devices stored in a safe place, where the electronics did not fry.
I am sure that FEMA, the military, and certain key agencies do indeed have a strategy for all this but it’s too bad the citizens don’t also. After all, only a staunch survivalist might, but we all consider them wackos in our society, maybe we need to rethink that thought, and go find a few of them to be our friends. Please consider all this and think on it.
