Two more Manchester United player ruled out of Arsenal clash after Casemiro blow
Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot will be unavailable for Manchester United’s trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal.
On Sunday, Erik ten Hag will lead his squad to the Emirates Stadium as Manchester United looks to gain more ground on title contender Arsenal.
In September, Manchester United defeated Mikel Arteta’s side 3-1 at Old Trafford, making them one of only three teams to force Arsenal to drop points this season.
United have traveled to London without influential midfielder Casemiro, who is suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season against Crystal Palace on Wednesday (1-1 draw).
Manchester United will be without French forward Anthony Martial and Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot, who did not accompany their teammates to London on Saturday evening.
Martial was forced off at halftime during last weekend’s Manchester derby and did not travel to Selhurst Park with Manchester United.
Dalot has missed United’s last two games due to a continuing rehabilitation from a muscle injury.
The absence of Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot will afford January signings Wout Weghorst and Aaron Wan-Bissaka an additional opportunity to make an impression.
The Netherlands striker Weghorst made his Red Devils debut against Crystal Palace, while Wan-Bissaka, who was overlooked earlier in the season, has begun to play a larger role for United.
Despite returning to first-team training earlier this week after a lengthy absence, Jadon Sancho will not play against Arsenal.
Rio Ferdinand anticipates that, in the absence of Casemiro, Ten Hag will play Lisandro Martinez in midfield and resist the temptation to revert to Fred and Scott McTominay.
“There’s no getting away from the fact that Casemiro will be a big miss against Arsenal this weekend,” Ferdinand told William Hill.
“He’s been brilliant since he’s come in, but United did beat Arsenal without him earlier in the season, so it’s not the end of the world.
“With him out, I’d imagine Erik ten Hag will shuffle the pack with Luke Shaw back at centre back, [Tyrell] Malacia at left back and [Lisandro] Martinez into central midfield.
“You’d think that is the way he’ll go, and in all honesty, I’d be pretty shocked if Ten Hag went with Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield as that doesn’t seem to work.”
Following last weekend’s victory in the north London derby, Arsenal has no new injury concerns and expects new signing Leandro Trossard to be available following his transfer from Brighton.
