Yankees’ Austin Wells cracks updated MLB Pipeline top 100 prospects list

MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects has been updated, including Yankees catching prospect Austin Wells on the list.

Wells, 23, is having a solid year with the Somerset Patriots, the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate. In 13 games (53 plate appearances), the left-hander is slashing .264/.339/.660 with six home runs, three doubles and 18 RBI. His production has him as MLB Pipeline’s No. 99 prospect.

Wells is a complete package at the plate, hitting for average and power while also drawing a healthy amount of walks. A left-handed hitter, he recognizes pitches and controls the strike zone, consistently producing hard contact to all fields. He creates plus raw power with his combination of strength and bat speed, and he taps into it by regularly driving the ball in the air.

The Yankees’ 2020 first-round pick made the list after Mets’ third baseman Brett Baty graduated from a prospect to a full-fledged rookie in the big leagues.

Wells becomes the second Yankee to land on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects this season. The other is Jasson Dominguez, the organization’s No. 1 prospect, who sits at No. 35 on the list.
